TKC Sunday Edition: Christmas storybooks come out on Dec. 1st.
My new book is being added to the collection this year!
Welcome to the Sunday Edition of This Kaleidoscope Career. Now in my 3rd/Third, Sunday is when I try to sit back with a cup of tea and put things in perspective. I think about work and life and what the week holds. As the mother of four grown children, an entrepreneur, a curious soul, and a creative to some degree, I hope you will join me in conversations about this life of ours…
This post is public so feel free to share it.
It’s December First! That means it’s time to pull out the box of classic Christmas storybooks our four children have grown up with. You see, every year, Santa would bring at least one new illustrated Christmas storybook to the children and, of course, they might receive one or two as gifts from other people. That grew into a big collection!
The classics top our list. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Mary Englebreit’s beautiful T’was the Night Before Christmas added a new vibrance to the classic poem by Clement C. Moore which turned Santa into a “jolly old elf” and added flying reindeer to the story.
We have The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg and many of Jan Brett’s wonderful Nordic-inspired books like The Mitten, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, Trouble with Trolls and more.
We have unique Aussie titles like Koala Christmas and A Bellbird in a Pear Tree along with the classic Twelve Days of Christmas illustrated and retold in other ways.
We carefully handle our beautiful pop-ups like Christmas in New York — which reminds them of all the places they have seen at different times in their explorations of NYC at holiday time.
This year, I am excited to add one more to the top of the collection — my newly published The Magic Christmas Sleigh. I built on that first classic of Santa as a benevolent gift-giving elf. It’s not as deliciously bound as some of those well-known titles but it is a classic tale that I hope bears retelling. This is a made-up story I have been telling to my kids for 30 years but finally it’s a book to share with everyone!
This year, we bring the Christmas storybook tradition to another generation — my first grandson. He will receive a new (to him) Christmas storybook each year — starting now with The Magic Christmas Sleigh dedicated to “All my Wallapixies.” (A nickname for our kids. And, yes. That is a story for another day.) One more special note. My niece illustrated this book. I hope it will find its way into your Christmas traditions, too.
About The Magic Christmas Sleigh:
In this enchanting new Christmas tale, discover how two clever elves realize Santa's sleigh can't hold all the presents for children around the world.
Beginning with the timeless words, "In that gentle place where all of us believe in something special," author Helen Jonsen Watkins weaves a heartwarming story of problem-solving, teamwork, and holiday magic.
With fun vibrant illustrations by Jordyn Domasin, this timeless story answers the age-old question: "How does Santa do it?" It’s a perfect addition to any family's holiday tradition.
